The Sino-German Symposium on “Novel NMR-based Methods for Organic Structure Determination” funded by Sino-German Center for Research Promotion (SGC) was held successfully on Nov. 19-21, 2014 in WenzhouJiangxin Riverview hotel. This symposium was organized by Prof. Christian Griesinger from Max-Planck-Institute for Biophysical Germany in Göttingen and Prof. Xinxiang Lei from Wenzhou University. This is the first meeting between German and Chinese scientists in the field of NMR spectroscopy for the application of natural products and organic synthesis. On the opening ceremony, chaired by Prof. Ren-Xiang Tan from Nanjing University, Prof. Christian Griesinger introduced the attendees from Germany as well as the history of the connections between the German and Chinese researchers in this field. Prof. Shaoming Huang, the vice president of Wenzhou University, delivered the welcome speech to the guests.

     10 German scientists from different universities and institutes including Max-Planck-Institute for Biophyiscal Chemistry, Max-Planck Institute for coal research, Karlsruhe Institute of technology, Technical University of Darmstadt, Alfred-Wegener-Institute and University of Göttingen attended the meeting. The Chinese researchers came from Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, China University of Technology, Nankai University, Shandong University, Ocean University of China, Hefei University of Technology, Wenzhou University, as well as Kunming Institute of Botany, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Institute of Oceanology, Chengdu Institute of Biology, Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prof. Roberto Gil from Carnegie Mellon University in the United States and Dr. Armando Navarro-Vazquez from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Brazil were invited to the symposium and gave very interesting talks about research. More than 40 young scientists and graduate students from Institute of Medicinal Plant Development of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and some local Universities also attended this symposium.
 

   
    During the meeting, the development of novel NMR techniques as well as their application in the study of challenging chemical systems was presented by the German researchers and the scientists from Brazil and U.S. The topics of Chinese researchers covered progress on natural product chemistry, synthesis, NMR spectroscopy as well as polymer chemistry. This symposium provided an excellent platform for the intensive discussion of different scientific topics. On the second day of the symposium a special section was organized, in which different collaborations and their funding possibilities were discussed. All attendee agreed that in this collaboration, based on the division of topics, researchers from both countries can contribute their core competences and complement each other in a highly productive manner.
